A Scenic Southern Napa Drive

Wine, art, sweeping vistas, shopping, and more wine await on a scenic drive from the town of Napa up Mt. Veeder and down the Oakville Grade into Oakville, with a final stop in Yountville.

Art and Wine in Napa

Head north from downtown Napa on Highway 29 to the Trancas Street/Redwood Road exit and turn west (left) onto Trancas Street. After you cross over Highway 29, the road's name changes to Redwood. Continue west, bearing left at the fork when Redwood narrows from four lanes to two. From here, two signs point the way to the Hess Collection. Allow an hour or so to taste the wines and browse the modern art collection.

Making the (Oakville) Grade

From Hess, backtrack on Redwood about 1¼ miles to Mt. Veeder Road and turn left. After a little more than 8 miles, turn right (east) onto Dry Creek Road. After ½ mile this road is signed as the Oakville Grade. The views east as you twist your way downhill to Highway 29 can be stunning, especially when a low-lying fog shrouds the valley floor. (If anyone in your party is prone to carsickness, take Redwood back to Highway 29 and turn north.) From the Oakville Grade, turn left (north) onto Highway 29 and right (east) in about ¼ mile onto Oakville Cross Road.

Amazing Cabernets

Head east on Oakville Cross, visiting either Silver Oak or, if you've reserved a tour and wine and food pairing ahead of time, B Cellars. Both wineries have enviable grape sources and highly skilled winemakers who blend amazing Cabernets.

Yountville Temptations

After your Oakville tasting, continue east on Oakville Cross, turning right (south) on the Silverado Trail and right again (west) onto Yountville Cross Road. Turn left at Yount Street, which leads into downtown Yountville, whose bakeries and boutiques tempt body and bank account. Washington Street, one block west of Yount, holds most of the action. To taste more wine, slip into the glam JCB Tasting Salon or Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley. Or drop by Gather Café by Stewart Cellars, where (until 3) you can have a light meal (and, if you'd like, a tasting). Kollar Chocolates in V Marketplace is another sweet option. Remain in Yountville for dinner, or return to Napa.
