As simple as it gets, The Garden Cottage is a 5-room bed and breakfast on a residential street in central LA. Homey, cute, and chock-full of foliage (garden is in the name), this quaint and peaceful accommodation plays hosts to an international clientele who likes a personal touch while also being in one of the best, and most walkable neighborhoods in the city.
The B&B is on the second floor of a Spanish style duplex and features hardwood floors, comfy beds, and lots of natural light. For privacy-concerned travelers, there are two rooms in the back of the house with their own private entrances.
The private cottage in the back is a fully appointed one-bedroom suite. You can enter through the side of the building and enjoy the peaceful backyard gardens to yourself.
White-tiled bathrooms feature standing sinks and shower/tub combos. They’re clean and private.
There’s no lobby, but there is a common living room with plush couches and chairs, books, and a fireplace. Like most B&Bs, there’s also community dining, and a common kitchen.
The Garden Cottage has a communal dining area and kitchen where guests receive complimentary breakfast as well as coffee and tea whenever they need a caffeine fix.
In the back yard of the duplex is a beautifully appointed garden with ornate statues, water fountains, flowers, and lush greenery. Outside is a sitting area where guests can bring their morning coffee and breakfast should they feel inclined.
This is one of the most walkable areas of LA, but if you want to rent a car, the Cottage will provide you with permits for parking on the street. Lyft and Uber rides are abundant in the area, and starting in 2018, there will be metro access nearby at LACMA. The Cottage is two blocks south of busy 3rd Street, which features some of the cities trendiest eateries, boutique shops, and bustling nightlife. Guests can find themselves within walking distance to museums, parks, grocery stores, and shopping malls.
Joan’s on Third (5-minute walk) is a French market and café with scrumptious pastries as well as sandwiches and salads. Izaka-Ya (5-minute walk) is a swanky sushi spot that also happens to have the best lunch deal in town!
Toca Madera (7-minute walk) is an upscale Mexican joint featuring happy hour specials with cheap bites and margaritas. Goal (5-minute walk) is a sports bar-lovers paradise with countless flat-screens, plush booths, and delicious bar food.
WHY WE LIKE IT
This B&B has all the personal touches in the right places. It’s clean, lush, and unfussy in every way. More importantly, in a city lacking walking areas, the Cottage is in the most centralized part of town and gives its guests access to restaurants, bars, shopping, and attractions within walking distance. Also, because of its central location, accessing the rest of the city with a car is extremely easy. There aren’t a ton of amenities--but you should expect that with any B&B. The reason you come here is the tranquility of the neighborhood, the privacy of your own room, and the access to anything you could possibly want.
