Fodor's Expert Review Omni Los Angeles Hotel at California Plaza

251 S. Olive St., Los Angeles, California 90012, USA See on Map

This 17-story hotel sits on the crossroads between LA’s blossoming arts community, ever-busy finance district, and the city’s gargantuan law firms. Here, a mix of business travelers occupy the hotel during the week, while weekends see a cornucopia of LA staycationers, conventioneers, and art lovers. The massive hotel has all your basic amenities, but it’s really the location that stands out with access to the city’s best museums and restaurants right outside the door.

Make sure you sign up for the hotel’s Select Guest program. It’s free to join and you’ll get complimentary Wi-Fi and bottled water in your room. Otherwise, you’re paying $9.95.

room

Rooms won’t be winning any style competitions, but beige and gray décor is inoffensive and the views from the upper floors are nothing short of spectacular. Each room comes with Keurig coffeemakers, plush robes, and very convenient plugs on the nightstands to charge your iPad while you watch.

If you book a room on the club level, you get access to a lounge with an enhanced continental breakfast, snacks throughout the day, and an open bar all night.

bathroom

The beige notes continue inside the bathrooms where shower/tub combos are consistent. You can also expect marble floors and counters and a convenient shaving mirror. Bath products are Omni branded.

lobby

High ceilings and double staircases provide a grand entrance for guests, as does an enormous yellow David Stromeyer sculpture dubbed “Yellow Fin”. Customers will find orange- and pineapple-infused water and a fully staffed concierge with Les Clefs d’Or certification--meaning they can get you into anything.

pool

A heated lap pool is situated on the patio of the fourth floor where guests can lounge under the blazing sun on black deck chairs and order a full complement of food and drinks.

spa

There are only two treatment rooms but a full offering of manicures, pedicures, facials, and massages.

YOU SHOULD KNOW If you plan to use these services, make sure you reserve ahead of time. With over 400 rooms in the hotel, they can book up fast.

gym

A good-sized fitness studio features Cybex and Life Fitness treadmills, bikes, and cardio machines. There are also free weights for old school workouts.

dining

The Omni is filled with dining options. First, there’s the Grand Café that’s open for breakfast and lunch and serves a Cali cuisine menu both indoors and out. Second is Morsel’s, a small grab-and-go coffee shop with Peet’s Coffee, pastries, and snacks. Finally, there Noé, a dinner-only hotspot with a full bar and ample outdoor seating offering up an eclectic menu of seasonal varieties.

If you want to get around to other great restaurants in Downtown, the hotel has a complimentary car service that will drop you off within a 3-mile radius. They’ll also pick you up and bring you back.

drinking

The bar at Noé opens at 3 p.m. and serves a variety of craft cocktails. A grand piano sits by the bar and gets a lot of use on most nights.

LOCATION

Getting Around

We would recommend against renting a car. First, parking is $48 a night! Second, the hotel has a complimentary car service. Third, you’re a block and a half from the nearest metro station that can take you Hollywood, Universal Studios, and Santa Monica. Fourth, there’s a Dash Bus that costs 50 cents. And fifth, Uber and Lyft drivers are everywhere and they’re cheap! Like we said, don’t rent a car. You might not know it driving up to the front of the hotel, but out back is one of the most bustling areas of downtown. Behind the hotel is the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), the Broad Museum, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. The area is safe, very walkable, and close to dozens of restaurants, bars, attractions, shops.

Restaurants

The Grand Central Market (3-minute walk) is just downhill from the Omni and has dozens of food vendors for breakfast and lunch. Patina (3-minute walk) inside Wall Disney Concert Hall is one of the finest French restaurants in LA.

Bars

It’s more of a restaurant, but the bar is super swanky at 71Above’s Sky Lounge (11-minute walk) that’s (you guessed it) on the 71st floor. For a livelier nightlife scene, head over to The Standard Hotel (7-minute walk) where they have multiple bars on their rooftop deck. Ask the concierge to get your name on a list.

WHY WE LIKE IT

For a hotel that caters to distinct groups because of its locale (lawyers, bankers, and art and music lovers), they do an excellent job of providing all guests with services that are right for them. The concierge can get anyone into anything, and the hotel offers a variety of packaged deals with tickets to museums and other attractions. The location is really the best part of this hotel. In back is the California Plaza that hosts a summer concert series, not to mention the direct access to incredible museums and music venues. All in all, the Omni is a comfortable stay where the surrounding area steals the show.
