Fodor's Expert Review Bumpass Hell

Lassen Volcanic National Park Geological Site Fodor's Choice

This site's quirky name came about when a man with the last name of Bumpass was severely burned after he stepped through brittle ground and into the boiling springs. A scenic but strenuous 3-mile round-trip hike brings you close to hot springs, hissing steam vents, and roiling mud pots. The trail is in the midst of a major rehabilitation and may be fully or partially closed through 2020—check ahead for its current status.
