Fodor's Expert Review Lost Horse Mine

Joshua Tree National Park Mine

This historic mine, which produced 10,000 ounces of gold and 16,000 ounces of silver between 1894 and 1931, was among Southern California's most productive mines. The 10-stamp mill is considered one of the best preserved of its type in the park system. The site is accessed via a fairly strenuous 4-mile round-trip hike. Mind the park warnings and don't enter any mine in Joshua Tree.
