Fodor's Expert Review McClard's Bar-B-Que

$ Hot Springs American

Bill Clinton loved this old-fashioned barbecue spot as a teenager, and with good reason. Owned by the same family for five generations, McClard's is the place to use up a wad of napkins eating hickory-smoked pork ribs dripping in a slightly spicy, tomato-based, vinegary sauce—that is, after you dig them out from under a mound of hand-cut french fries. Seating here is limited, but the wait is worth it. Use your time to look around at what other guests are eating. Chances are, you'll see a Tamale Spread: a bed of tamales topped with Fritos, chopped beef, chili beans, cheese, and onions, with a generous splash of barbecue sauce on top and served with Saltines, Arkansas style. Locals rave about the barbecued chicken, available only on Wednesday.
