Fodor's Expert Review Grapevine Canyon Ranch
Highland Rd., Pearce, Arizona, USA
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
Nestled deep in the Dragoon Mountains' Grapevine Canyon, this historic cattle ranch spurs the imagination with hair-raising tales of marauding Apache Indians and pioneering homesteaders. This natural stronghold once used by Chiricahua Indians led by Geronimo and Cochise is tamer these days, but the striking high-desert terrain and scattered cienegas (marshes) still provide enticing opportunities for adventurous exploration. Grapevine is a working cattle ranch, where visitors get the chance to watch—and, in many cases, participate in—day-to-day cowboy activities. Rooms are decorated in a mix of country and Southwestern-style furnishings—and all have spacious decks and porches. Rates include riding, meals, and all activities.
