Fodor's Expert Review Fort Apache Indian Reservation

Salt River Canyon Visitor Center

The elevation of the tribal lands ranges from 3,000 feet at the bottom of Salt River to 11,000 feet in the White Mountains, and the area provides some of the best outdoor recreation in the state. The 2,500-square-mile reservation is the ancestral home of the White Mountain Apache Tribe; most of the more than 15,000 tribal members live in nine towns, and the largest of these towns, Whiteriver (population 5,200), serves as tribal headquarters. Tribal enterprises include Sunrise Ski Resort, Hon-Dah Resort Casino, cattle ranching, and lumber.
