Midway between Seward and Homer, this lodge lives up to its name with activities that include natural-history and other soft-adventure options, and a remote bear-viewing camp. The fishing guides are top-notch, and seven world records have been set along the camp's riverbanks. Rates include lodging, meals, most activities, and free Anchorage pickup. Also available are single-day fishing trips, group packages, and a fly-out bear-viewing camp. Rooms, which are in the main lodge or in riverside cabins, have fireplaces, artwork, and comfortable seating. Some of the cabins are two stories with spiral staircases.
