Fodor's Review

The cellar of what used to be Montréal's first women's prison hardly sounds like the ideal setting for an Italian restaurant, but Grandma Emma's cooking is satisfying enough to drive out any bad vibes from those days. The stone walls and heavy beams make an ideal, catacomb-like setting for tasting such Roman specialties as roasted lamb with grilled vegetables, fettuccini with porcini mushrooms, stuffed breast of veal, pasta al vongole, and tripe in tomato sauce. Da Emma attracts celebrities like Jake Gyllenhaal, Frida Pinto, and Johnny Depp when they're in town—repeat customers who enjoy the semi-privacy of the covered terrace and private garden. Reservations are recommended for Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
