Fodor's Expert Review Valhalla Lodge Bed & Breakfast

Rte. 436, Gunner's Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador, A0K 2X0, Canada Fodor's Choice

On a hill overlooking "Iceberg Alley" 8 km (5 miles) from L'Anse aux Meadows, the Valhalla has quiet and brightly painted rooms with large windows, pine Scandinavian furniture, and handmade quilts. The sitting room's rock fireplace contains some fossils. Breakfast is a treat, especially pancakes with local berry sauce. Pulitzer Prize–winner E. Annie Proulx, author of The Shipping News, stayed here while writing the novel and two homes in which she lived form part of the property—Quoyle's, a three-bedroom A-frame house with a sea view, and Wavey's, a low-ceilinged Newfoundland saltbox with two bedrooms. You can even take Proulx's dory for a row.

PROS

  • view of whales and icebergs (and occasionally the aurora borealis) from the lodge
  • sauna
  • sitting room with fireplace and patio

CONS

  • few services or restaurants within walking distance
  • some bathrooms small
