Fodor's Expert Review Kingston Hotel

757 Richards St., Vancouver, British Columbia, V6B 3A6, Canada See on Map

If you're looking for a budget-friendly hotel with a European feel right in the center of downtown, you'll definitely want to check out the Kingston Hotel. This four-story property has the kind of kitschy decor that definitely isn't going to win any style awards, but lends a certain kind of charm that will make for an enjoyable (and cozy!) stay during your next trip to Vancouver.

The rooms at the Kingston Hotel are definitely on the smaller side, but have everything you need for a comfortable stay—including free Wi-Fi.

If you want to watch a movie or catch up on the latest episode of your favorite show during your stay, make sure you request a room with a TV—some rooms don't come equipped with television sets.

Most of the rooms at the Kingston Hotel have shared bathrooms, which feature showers and toilet stalls. If you want your own bathroom, you'll have to upgrade.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Some of the guestrooms try to make up for the fact that they're missing a bathroom by featuring a sink in the middle of the room, which you might find a little strange.

The lobby is small but comfortable and has a nice little reading nook where you can curl up with a good book in one of the hotel's cranberry-colored armchairs.

A continental breakfast is included in your room rate and includes bagels, fruit, cereal, and coffee service.

If you're looking to dine out, make sure to stop by Kingston Taphouse and Grille next door—guests get 15% off their bill.

There is no on-site drinking at the Kingston Hotel.

Getting Around

Underground self-parking is available for $30 a night, or you can take a quick 4-minute walk to the Vancouver City Centre Station to catch the SkyTrain.

For casual pub food, head next door to Kingston Taphouse & Grille (1-minute walk)—their selection of flatbreads are particularly tasty and make for a solid lunch. For something a bit more adventurous, try Japadog (2-minute walk) a unique fast food joint that serves Japanese hot dogs with toppings like miso sauce, yakisoba noodles, and seaweed.

If you're in the mood for a beer, try The Fountainhead Pub (17-minute walk), which has great daily specials and an impressive collection of 15 beers on tap (including a number of local offerings). If you're more in the mood for a cocktail, head to The Keefer Bar (19-minute walk), which serves a unique menu of apothecary-inspired cocktails like the Trocadero Spritz, made with rosemary-infused Cynar, Averna, lemon, honey, and sparkling wine.

This hotel definitely isn't the fanciest property in Vancouver, but the rooms are comfortable, there's easy access to all that downtown has to offer (Robson Street, the city's main shopping district, is within walking distance), and the price? It can't be beat.
