Fodor's Expert Review El Rincón de Meche

$ Casco Viejo Latin American

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Overlooking the picture-perfect church and plaza of Mi Pueblito, this typical Panamanian restaurant occupies a copy of a turn-of-the-century adobe building, with beamed ceilings and colorful Carnaval masks hanging on the walls. The only anachronisms are the ceiling fans, the stereo playing Panamanian folk music, and the sound of traffic on nearby Avenida de los Mártires. Nevertheless, the setting is quite pleasant, and the ample menu includes typical Panamanian fare, from arroz con pollo (chicken and rice) to cazuela de mariscos (seafood stew). The views from tables on the covered terrace and second-floor porch are quite nice, if you can live without the ceiling fans. It's a good spot to be on Sunday afternoons, when there is a free folk-dancing performance on the plaza.
