Mérida comes into its own once the sun begins to set and the heat of the afternoon gives way to the cool of the evening. The city has an active and diverse cultural life, which includes free government-sponsored music and dance performances many evenings, as well as sidewalk art shows in local parks. On Thursday at 9 pm Meridanos enjoy an evening of outdoor entertainment at the Serenata Yucateca, held in Parque Santa Lucía (Calles 60 and 55); you'll see trios, the local orchestra, and soloists performing compositions by Yucatecan composers. On Saturday evenings after 7 pm the Noche Mexicana (corner of Paseo Montejo and Calle 47) hosts different musical and cultural events. More free music, dance, comedy, and regional handicrafts can be found at the Corazón de Mérida, on Calle 60 between the main plaza and Calle 55. From 8 pm to 1 am, multiple bandstands throughout this area (which is closed to traffic) entertain locals and visitors with an ever-changing playbill, from grunge to classical.
On Sunday, six blocks around Plaza Grande are closed off to traffic, and you can see performances—often mariachi and marimba bands or folkloric dancers—at Plaza Santa Lucía, Parque Hidalgo, and the main plaza. For a schedule of current performances, consult the tourist offices, the local newspapers, or the posters at the Teatro Peón Contreras and Centro Cultural de Mérida Olimpo.
The city center and Paseo Montejo area are largely safe at night with throngs of people out enjoying themselves. (Standard precautions about watching your things apply, of course.) Restaurants and nightspots are happy to call you a taxi or have a guard hail one for you when you’re ready to call it a night.
The café-bar at Mérida's landmark 1908 theater is one of the most happening nightspots in town. Tables spill onto the street, where locals gather to hear balladeers singing romantic and politically inspired songs. The drinks are expensive and the food is nothing special, so only go if you want culture, live music, and an opportunity to splurge.
Part food court (15 stands with a variety of food), part bar, part live-music venue in a restored 1906 building, Casa Dominga offers live music many nights, usually Mexican or Cuban.
One of Mérida's historic traditional cantinas, Dzalbay is experiencing a second life in the hands of a group of expat musician-owners. The bar has a crowded calendar of performances by blues and jazz acts, both local musicians and ones passing through Mérida. A large outdoor terrace and menus of signature cocktails, microbrews, and bar snacks also help make Dzalbay a local favorite. If a low-key, welcoming cantina is what you are searching for, it may become your favorite too.
You can expect cheesy cabaret-style entertainment and comedy acts with no drink minimum and no cover at El Nuevo Tucho—but this isn't just a place for young people. Families come to dine here as well. There's music for dancing in the cavernous—sometimes full, sometimes empty—venue. Drinks come with free appetizers. Plan for midday entertainment since this place closes at 2 pm on weekdays and at 5 pm on Saturdays.

Location, location, location is the allure of this loud and colorful drinking establishment. Right in the heart of the historic center just a block from Plaza Grande—but with branches around the city—the tourist magnet offers live music and drinks served in plastic yard glasses. It's one of the best spots to grab a beer and watch Mérida in action.

A pleasant atmosphere, flowing beer, and live music are what make this bar one of Mérida's best-kept secrets (you might want to pass on the food). Grab a spot in the beer garden where you can listen to live reggae, rock, or jazz. A rather worn billiard table and occasional entertainment—such as belly dancers and fire spinners—draw in a decent crowd.
If dancing to the likes of romantic trios of the 1940s is your style, don't miss the Tuesday-night ritual at Parque de Santiago, where older folks and the occasional young lovers gather for dancing under the stars at 8:30 pm.
