Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Socaire

Calle 55 No. 22, between Calles 12 and 14, Campeche City, Campeche, 24000, Mexico

Layering the new on top of the old can be fraught with risks, but this hotel in a restored colonial building with accents of contemporary art strikes just the right balance. Attractive rooms surround a pleasant courtyard and accompanying pool; they are of moderate size and contain safes and TVs as well as splashes of tropical color in the drapes and spreads. A complimentary breakfast is served in the on-site café. Socaire (the name means "toward the leeward side") is well-situated on a street that's peaceful enough to make parking possible directly in front. At this writing, the hotel is restoring the vintage building next door to seamlessly double its size.
