Fodor's Expert Review Hacienda Santo Domingo
Calle 18, between Calles 33 and 35, Izamal, Yucatán, 97540, Mexico Fodor's Choice
Built on a 44-acre property, this hotel has freestanding rooms separated by carefully tended gardens full of exotic plants and fruit trees. Accommodations are sparingly decorated with folk art, and some have carved Mayan stones incorporated into the walls. The spacious rooms have couches, and several have DVD players, outdoor showers, and Jacuzzis; for a bit more privacy, request one at the edge of the lush property. The restaurant is exceptional. Breakfast is included in the rate; a welcome drink and afternoon refreshments are also complimentary. Just off the outdoor dining area, carved stones have been used to create a faux ruin above the pool. Note that you'll probably encounter the sheep and two friendly dogs that roam the grounds.
