Fodor's Expert Review The Beach Tulum

Carretera Tulum–Boca Paila, Km 7, Zona Hotelera, Tulum, Quintana Roo 77780 See on Map

Stylish, beachfront, adults-only boutique hotel, where intimacy and friendliness is the norm. Tulum’s natural landscape is amazing by itself, The Beach has only enhanced that beauty by making the most of a wonderful beach, and providing rooms that blend seamlessly with the environment.

room

Each one of the 28 rooms at The Beach is right on the beach. Crazy, right? Décor is mostly white and clear, with rustic-wood touches here and there. The Rooftop Jacuzzi suite has exactly that and some awesome views of the Mexican Caribbean, while some other rooms enjoy the benefits of having a private heated plunge pool.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Mosquitos can be a real pain. So, even if that terrace looks awesome, after sunset you may prefer to stay indoors.

bathroom

The bathrooms are so cool here. Some open directly to the beach, others have a nice little window so you can take a bath while looking at the sea. All of them come with bathtubs, double sink and Damana organic toiletries.

lobby

The lobby is a welcoming area that doesn’t decides if it wants to look Mayan or oriental, and it looks like a bit of both. It does have a bar, a pool table and a normal table with sand on top. It’s an eclectic lobby, no doubt about it.

pool

This pool is gorgeous, so creative and with so much good taste. First, it’s turquoise-colored, just like the Caribbean, it makes you wonder why not every pool in the Riviera Maya is like this? Then, it just extends itself like in a labyrinth completely surrounded by lavish vegetation, sandy paths and a classic wooden deck. A swing, loungers and a Jacuzzi completes the picture.

spa

The Naj Naay Spa is one of the latest additions to the hotel and keeps with the harmonic atmosphere of the place. It offers Mayan, Thai and Crystaltherapy among other treatments.

If you want to impress your partner, you should book the Package Five for Lovers and share a Samunprai massage at sunset with your significant other.

Yoga

gym

While there is not a proper fitness center like those in your hometown, The Beach does have a nice area designated to take care of the body and the spirit through different types of yoga. There are daily group yoga classes, while you can also book private classes in advance.

dining

There are two options, Ziggy’s and Fresco’s. Ziggy’s is an adjacent restaurant specialized in fresh local seafood, that provides complimentary breakfasts for guests of The Beach. Fresco’s, on the other hand, is the healthy option with plenty of sandwiches, smoothies and energy drinks.

drinking

Besides smoothies and energy drinks, you can also enjoy a good old-fashion cocktail by the beach at Ziggy’s Beach Club. A relaxing bar by the beach, with comfy beds under the shade of coconut trees and wooden tables right on the sand just steps away from the Caribbean.

LOCATION

Getting Around

The Beach Tulum Hotel is a great choice if you want to stay away from all the buzz and hustle. One hour and 40 minutes after leaving the Cancun International Airport, you will end up directly on the white sand of Tulum and odds are that you won’t feel like moving anywhere else. The hotel is relatively far even from Tulum attractions, but that may be an asset for peace-looking guests. However, the concierge will easily get a taxi for you to move around the area.

Restaurants

The Hotel Restaurants Fresco’s and Ziggy’s are well known for its cuisine and excellent service so you may live without eating out, but being in Tulum obliges. Kitchen Table (11-minute drive) is one of these establishments that offer small menu and excel at every dish, you simply want to try it all, add that to a modern, wooden-based design and you’ll understand why everybody loves it. Ukami (4-minute walk) is a jungle sushi bar, yes, you read that right, and a bloody good one!

Bars

Pasito Tun Tun (16-minute drive) in Tulum is a boutique bar with Mezcal drinks, and great music day and night. Loved by locals and tourists alike. If you want something closer to the hotel, Ciel Rose Sunset Bar (7-minute drive or a 30-minute walk) is famous for its delicious sunset cocktails on the rooftop. If they didn’t serve cocktails and just offered the views, it would still be worth visiting.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Because it’s unpretentious but successful. It has style in strides, but understands that the best asset it has is the stunning nature that surrounds it. We love the swimming pool and that all rooms have direct access to the beach. One of the best beaches in the world, nothing less.
