Fodor's Expert Review Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancún

Carretera 307, Km 306.5, Punta Maroma, Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo 77710, Mexico See on Map

Romance with style seems to be the motto of the Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun. This adults-only all-inclusive resort is located in a private beach considered as one of the best in the Riviera Maya. Service is top-notch, rooms are luxurious and classy, and amenities are plenty and diverse.

room

There are 412 luxury suites distributed in 9 different categories. Every room includes a private terrace or balcony, two person hydrotub and ocean or garden views. The decoration is elegant and modern, with the four-poster canopy king size bed being a kind of signature throughout the resort. Swim up suites offer a refreshing splash without the long walks to the pool a hotel of this size usually conveys.

Guests of the Preferred Club not only enjoy an upgraded suite, but upgraded services and amenities too.

The bathrooms’ style includes pink marble and black wood accents. Although this is a romantic hotel, bathroom sinks and showers are not to be shared, as they come in pairs. However, the tub does have room for two persons.

spa

Secrets Spa by Pevonia is a truly world-class Spa and it’s one of the highlights of the resort. Seaweed wrap, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, hot stones, black mud, reflexology, papaya, pineapple, chocolate and coffee manicure. You name it, they have it. However, in a romantic paradise like this what you really need to try are those treatments for couples in gorgeous private cabins by the beach.

drinking

Enjoy top-shelf spirits and premium wines in any of the six available bars distributed along the premises of the hotel. The list includes a music lounge, a swim-up bar, a theater bar and a pool and beach bar among others. There is also an extra bar exclusive for Preferred Club guests.

activities

Choose from ping-pong tables, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, mini-golf, beach and water volleyball courts, yoga, euro-bungee, dance lessons, cocktail lessons, aqua-aerobics, snorkel, kayak, windsurfing, and many other activities available at Secrets Maroma. Most hotels of this category don’t bother to offer all these options for their guests and they deserve recognition for that.

LOCATION

Getting Around

The hotel is just a short 35-minute drive away from the Cancun International Airport. It is not within walking distance from downtown Playa del Carmen, but getting a taxi won’t ruin you. You can also rent a car with the help of concierge and enjoy freely the parks and ruins in the area.

Restaurants

You are close enough to enjoy all the restaurants that Playa del Carmen has to offer. Zenzi (30-minute drive) is one of the surprisingly few beach, laid-back establishments that offers both great food and great ambience. Barefoot waiters and barefoot guests, classic Playa del Carmen. If you don’t mind something a bit inland, Casa Sofia (25-minute drive) is a place most frequently chosen by the locals for a great decently-priced Italian food. It has won its reputation for pizza and pastas so you already know what to order.

Bars

Patio 8 (30-minute drive) at Fifth Avenue with Eighth is a perfect spot to enjoy some beer or cocktails, and watch the colorful crowd passing by. Apart from that, their cheese has some real fans. Harry’s Prime Steakhouse & Raw Bar (25-mintue drive) is a very posh option for a bar, but the excellent service and top-notch dishes are what make it worthy. You shouldn’t regret spending a bit more.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Because of the diversity it brings to the table in almost every area. 13 swimming pools? 9 restaurants? 7 bars? You got to be kidding me! We also love the outstanding Spa, the wide array of activities for guests and the spectacular beach.
