A rustic, secluded and off the grid inn located in Riviera Maya’s little sister and less-hyped destination of Costa Maya, just 20 km north of Mahahual. Mayan Beach Garden is all about disconnecting from the real world and enjoying a wonderful stretch of beach, in a friendly environment where guests are treated like family.
All hotel rooms and cabanas solar powered and share a simple, but colorful style with wooden furniture and traditional Mexican mosaic-designs in walls and floors. The beach front terraces are gorgeous spaces with hammocks, lounge chairs and glorious ocean views. Some rooms enjoy air conditioning, others just ceiling fans. A couple of rooms also include kitchenette.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Even in the rooms that enjoy air conditioning, this is only by night. This situation added to the absence of swimming pool, can make the day hours really hot, and push you to the waters of the Caribbean Sea for some refreshing splash.
The bathrooms at Mayan Beach Garden are simple but spacious and colorful with shower, and hand-painted tiles and sink. There are rooms where the sink might be just in front of the bed, others where you get a little more privacy, just don’t expect unnecessary luxuries here. Somehow, that’s exactly the point.
Directly from the street, guests get into the hotel through a sandy path surrounded by lush vegetation and a tropical feeling that won’t leave you through the length of your stay. You won’t find what you would call a proper lobby, but here is not needed.
There is no swimming pool on the premises of the Mayan Beach Garden, but you don’t really need it, the Caribbean Sea is just a few steps away and waves are almost non-existent in this area.
There is a surprising long list of massages, facials and Spa services at this charming hotel. What is more, you can choose if you want your massage to be by the beach, under the moonlight, in your own cabana or hotel room or even on the rooftop terrace.
The restaurant is the meeting point where you get to socialize with other guests and with the owners of the place. It looks like a Mexican typical restaurant with colorful tablecloth and traditional equipales chairs. You can get a meal plan that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, and there are also Yucatecan cooking classes available for guests.
If there is good weather, you can ask the staff to bring your meal to your own deck. They will arrange everything up so you don’t even need to get out of your room or cabana.
Enjoy a fresh coconut water on the comfortable setting of your own terrace, or a cool tropical cocktail at a lounge chair by the beach. The restaurant is equipped with a nice wooden bar that reminds of the typical Mexican cantina, where you can enjoy a shot of good tequila and share stories from back home.
This place is really secluded. From Cancun International Airport a 4.5-hour drive is needed to arrive to Mayan Beach Garden. Chetumal International Airport is ‘only’ 2 hours away by car. The large distances here, make renting a car an alluring option.
Mahahual is far from everything, but the Mayan Beach Garden is even far from Mahahual, so if you want to dine out you better be ready for a good drive. The Krazy Lobster (36-minute drive) serves seafood dishes by the beach of Mahahual. Big Mama (40-minute drive) also by the beach, offers traditional Mexican seafood recipes. If you can manage spicy food, aguachile is particularly good.
An impressive collection of tequilas is waiting for your visit at Fernando’s 100% Agave (40-minute drive). Enjoy a cold beer or a tropical cocktail in a Balinese bed overlooking the Caribbean at Ibiza Sunset Mahahual (42-minute drive).
WHY WE LIKE IT
Because it feels like home and it’s actually in the Caribbean. You can just step off your terrace and feel the white sand of this gorgeous beach. We love the fact that there is no other property around for kilometers.
