One of the best hotels in Mahahual, La Posada de los 40 Cañones (Forty Cannons Hotel) is a well-rounded option in the Costa Maya. It offers extraordinary views of the Caribbean Sea, beach club, on-site restaurant and an excellent service that really goes the extra mile.
Almost every room at Los 40 Cañones includes a version of their signature hanging beds and a simple but refreshing style, with white as their primary color. The use of recycled pallet wood gives the place a hipster vibe. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and cable TV.
There are also 15 apartments available in nearby buildings, which include kitchenette, dining room, living room, and a whole series of different amenities designed for longer stays.
The bathrooms come with a single vanity sink, hairdryer, and shower with half-wall but no door. There is not ample space but more than enough, and they are clean, modern and well-appointed in general.
The lobby of Los 40 Cañones is a white, open plan space surrounded by tropical gardens and lit by rustic lamps hanging from the ceiling. There are plenty of quaint traditional ‘equipales’ (chairs with leather seat) for sitting while waiting for your room.
A wide thatched-roof palapa with a nice terrace overlooking Mahahual’s malecon, is the setting where tasty fusion dishes of Mexican and Italian cuisines are served to guests and non-guests alike. By night, the whole place gets a romantic atmosphere thanks to the yellow light of the large wicker lanterns hanging from the palapa. The staff will take any dish all the way to the beach club, so you won’t need to leave the beach to satisfy your tummy
The restaurant is a good spot to enjoy a cold beer in the afternoon or a glass of wine after sunset. However, Pez Quadro, the 40 Cañones’ beach club, is the best place in the area to enjoy a cool tropical cocktail while relaxing in a Balinese bed by the beach. Pez Quadro offers different packages of food and drinks, Wi-Fi access, showers and even a variety of massages.
There is no swimming pool in this hotel, but with the calm waters of this part of the Caribbean, the certainly looks and feels like another pool. The Mesoamerican Reef running along the Costa Maya keeps the area mostly free of waves.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Although the beach is spectacular and one of the best in all the Costa Maya, seaweed is a constant issue and can get annoying at times.
40 Cañones Hotel is located on the virgin beaches of Mahahual, which means it’s quite far away from busy tourist destinations of the Yucatan Peninsula. Obviously, for many, that's a pro, and a 4-hour drive from Cancun International Airport is not a drawback. If you plan to stay in Mahahual, you may easily get without a car, but if you feel like seeing a bit more of the area, it is highly recommended to rent one.
Ñam Ñam (5-minute walk) is an obligatory culinary stop in Mahahual. Food is simple: hamburgers and empanadas, but what hamburgers and what empanadas are these! Sulumar (3-minute walk) serves the best seafood in town, and probably the best on the Costa Maya. It’s always fresh, tasty and affordable!
Yaya Beach (3-minute walk) is a beach bar with lounge chairs, swings and beach beds. Not enough? Their drinks are pretty good. Costa Maya Swim Up Bar (11-minute drive) is a bit further away, but has a swim-up bar, and live traditional music.
WHY WE LIKE IT
We love their signature hanging beds and the overall décor of the rooms. Pez Quadro may be the best beach club in all Mahahual, and guests of Los 40 Cañones have direct access. The ocean views are stunning!
