Fodor's Expert Review El Caballo Blanco
Av. Mahahual, Mza 12, Lote 1, Mahahual, Quintana Roo 77940, Mexico See on Map
El Caballo Blanco is a small beachfront hotel in Mahahual that offers both gorgeous details and kitsch design. Excellent service and a laid-back attitude make of the place a relaxing spot where guests can relax and enjoy the outstanding natural surroundings.

room
The rooms are well-appointed, each featuring air-conditioning, Wi-Fi access, cable TV, mini-fridge, two queen-sized beds and balcony or terrace. Décor is weird, with kitsch mural paintings that can be at once both impressive and intrusive. Some suites include delightful wooden-deck terraces with comfy chaise lounges and spectacular views of the Caribbean.
As all rooms include a fridge, it’s a good idea to buy some groceries or drinks before arrival.
bathroom
The space is limited and for that reason most suites have the bathroom sinks right in the room. Toilet and shower do have their own private space, which is very basic too.
lobby
More than a lobby, El Caballo Blanco entrance is just an office-like reception room with a front-desk and little else.
pool
The rooftop terrace with an ocean-view swimming pool set under a typical Mexican palapa, has to be the most exciting part of this little quaint hotel. It is a small dipping pool, but a pool nonetheless, and the surrounding loungers and tables make of this spot the most popular in the hotel.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The pool is too small and at times it can get a bit crowded, as there are not many other places to go in the hotel.
dining
A small restaurant on the ground floor of El Caballo Blanco serves Mexican food for breakfast and lunch. Simple stuff like chilaquiles and guacamole, but also more elaborated seafood dishes such as ceviche or even lobster.
drinking
La Tartaleta as that little restaurant is called, will also provide guests with the customary cold canned beer, or even a tropical cocktail to enjoy at sunset.
LOCATION
Getting Around
If you are flying to Chetumal International Airport, then getting a taxi may not be such a bad idea for a 2-hour ride. However, if you arrive at Cancun International Airport do not under any circumstance get a taxi, it would cost you more than what you just paid for your international flight. Inside Mahahual, everything is within walking distance.
Restaurants
The best pizzas in town are at Divino Delicia Italiana (2-minute walking). Fernando’s 100% Agave (1-minute walking) serves outstanding seafood and excellent tequilas. Maya Bar (6-minute walk) offers a casual tropical setting with ocean views and live music.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Because all rooms enjoy spectacular ocean views. We love that plunge pool in the rooftop terrace. The beach is wonderful.
