Fodor's Expert Review Akalki
Carretera 307, Km 12.5, Bacalar, Quintana Roo, 77900, Mexico, Bacalar, Quintana Roo 77900, Mexico See on Map
Near the border with Belize, there is a sacred lagoon of seven colors called Bacalar. On its shores, there is this gorgeous hotel and holistic center, Akalki. A group of cabanas built on top of the water, just like those in the Maldives or Seychelles, provide the perfect background to find peace and reconnect with nature.

room
With only 11 cabanas, Akalki guarantees a peaceful environment. Most cabanas are built over the water, with thatched roofs, exquisite wood floors, and a whimsical interior of white tones and Mayan accents. They all run on solar energy and include a ceiling fan and hardwood deck with the most amazing views of the lagoon and the jungle.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Bugs and mosquitoes are unavoidable in a place like this, so you better bring your own repellent and an open mind attitude in this regard.

bathroom
The bathrooms offer ample space and a traditional Mexican style. The showers have tiled-walls, hot water, and even seating area.
lobby
Akalki’s lobby is a big welcoming palapa set in the middle of the property and overlooking the tranquil waters of the lagoon.
pool
The pool here is the lagoon, kids jump from the pier and the adults directly from their suites’ decks. There are also kayaks available for guests who’d like to explore a little bit further into the waters of Bacalar.
spa
Akalki is a healing center that focuses on offering holistic therapies to achieve a balance of wellbeing between the body and the emotions. They offer a wide array of treatments such as hot stones massages, temazcal, sound-therapy (meditation with sound-making bowls) and aguahara, which is a massage in the waters of Bacalar.
Not all therapists are based in the center every day. In order to not miss on your preferred treatment, make sure to book it in advance.
gym
There is no gym at Akalki, but they do have yoga palapa where guests can receive group or private classes. A yoga session by sunset in a setting like this is a fascinating experience.
dining
La Botica by Akalki is a delightful restaurant full of healthy options prepared with fresh ingredients that come directly from the orchard located in the premises of the hotel. It serves mostly vegetarian dishes, with some seafood additions.
drinking
As a holistic center and healthy paradise, you won’t find intoxicating beverages at hand. Fresh juices and organic coffee is all you get here. But hey, at least you’ll get inner peace…
LOCATION
Getting Around
Akalki is quite away from everything, so renting a car is your best option to get to the hotel from Cancun International Airport. It’s an 4-hour drive but then, having your own vehicle will give you independence to explore the area.
Restaurants
Cenote Azul (13-minute drive) is a must being so close to the hotel. Maybe their Mexican food is just decent but the cenote cannot be missed. La Playita (20-minute drive) has the best ceviche around Lake Bacalar.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Because it’s peaceful, healthy and holistic. It has cabanas on the water and its own orchard. We love the interior design of the cabanas.
