Fodor's Expert Review House of Wind and Water

Calle Azucena 1109, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, 48373, Mexico

While this cozy B&B has some traditional elements like brick archways, tile floors, and fine woodwork, most of the design elements are the creations or acquisitions of the artist-owners: large format paintings, whimsical bathrooms with hand-painted sinks and exposed copper tubing, and estate-sale furnishings. Guest-room balconies, the dining room, and plunge pool on the garden terrace overlook an amazing hillside of wild tropical plants and the Cuale River. Although not in downtown Vallarta, this property is a breath of fresh air for those who don't mind being a cab, bus, or car ride away from the action. Fully filtered fresh spring water from the mountain flows from all the faucets and showerheads, and the owners compost, using water-saving appliances and other ecologically minded practices. The hotel is the venue for courses that combine Vallarta experiences (like whale-watching, snorkeling, or trips to the mountains or botanical gardens) with artistic creations in cloth, ceramic tiles, or other media.

  • in a real Mexican neighborhood by the Cuale River
  • gorgeous views of jungle-clad hillside
  • ecoconscious owners

  • at end of a long, rather steep dirt driveway
  • no air-conditioning
  • no shopping or nightlife in immediate area
