The region may not look that big on paper, but tackling both city and coast in less than a week isn't possible without exhausting yourself. Driving from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido, for example, takes a minimum of seven hours. Flying is time-consuming and expensive. If your time is limited, choose either the city and its surroundings or the coast.
