Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Royal Reforma

Amberes 78, Mexico City, Quintana Roo, 06600, Mexico See on Map

With the perfect location at the intersection of Insurgentes and Chapultepec avenues, this once-fancy hotel has settled into being a solid, well-priced mid-range hotel. The immaculate marble lobby is filled with plants and the exuberant conversation of its guests. Mostly-spacious rooms have large bathrooms and well-equipped work areas.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The hotel was known for its acclaimed restaurant Tezka, which recently closed.

room

Some rooms have been updated but most are in need; ask to see the room before checking in. Even the mattress and blanket qualities differ among rooms.

There is one 2-story, 1000-sq. ft. master suite, often available at a good price for its size.

bathroom

Dated but clean.

lobby

Spacious, gleaming, and modern with marble and glass; a bit of a disconnect with the dated rooms.

pool

Rooftop pool is very small but with a large sundeck and bar area, and stunning views.

spa

There is a sauna, but no spa services.

gym

Small but well-equipped fitness center with a nice view.

dining

The on-site Primavera restaurant is good in a pinch but there are plenty of better options within short walking distance.

drinking

The rooftop bar offers well-priced drinks with a view.

LOCATION

Getting Around

The best way to get around Mexico City is via Uber or similar ride-share services, like Cabify and the by-women for-women Laúdrive. The hotel is technically in the Zona Rosa but across the street from Roma Norte, a cool and walkable neighborhood.

Restaurants

De Mar a Mar (8-minute walk) is a casually chic seafood spot with immaculately fresh fish. Despite its modest setting, Alba Cocina Local (6-minute walk) serves some of the neighborhoods for deliciously inventive Mexican fare, like octopus terrine with habanero, lychee, and puffed rice.

Bars

Salon Niza (5-minute walk) is a classic cantina recently discovered by a trendy younger set. the underground cocktail haven Xaman (8-minute walk) serves drinks inspired by prehispanic cultures.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Perfect location at a good price, and a rooftop pool.
