Fodor's Expert Review El Patio 77

Icazbalceta 77, Mexico City, Quintana Roo, 06470, Mexico, Mexico City, Mexico See on Map Fodor's Choice

This thoughtfully appointed B&B in a stately 19th-century brick building is an attractive option for those looking for a homey, eco-friendly, design-forward base in one of Mexico City's emerging artsy neighborhoods, San Rafael. Slightly off the beaten path on a street several blocks northwest of the Monumento a la Revolución, El Patio's verdant garden area greets you upon arrival; inside, checkerboard-tile floors and spiral staircases lead you to eight themed guest rooms, each named for and decorated in the style of a different region of Mexico. Solar-powered heaters, various water-saving initiatives, and reclaimed or repurposed furnishings give El Patio its green tint.

The word "suite" is used liberally here, and you'll want to see your room before confirming, as many rooms are quite small. Grand and Double rooms have shared bathrooms. Purified drinking water, without plastic exposure, is provided for free.

bathroom

Despite the commitment to water and energy conservation, hot water is plentiful and water pressure is powerful.

lobby

Homey and discreet, with some comfortable seating and complimentary mezcal while you wait to check in.

dining

Breakfast is complimentary.

LOCATION

Getting Around

The best way to get around Mexico City is via Uber or similar ride-share services, like Cabify and the by-women for-women Laúdrive.

Restaurants

La Polar (8-minute walk) has been serving nothing but birria—the stewed meat from Jalisco state—since 1934; order it in a bowl or as individual tacos. Try tacos of filete, costilla, or other grilled meats at El Califa de Leon (8-minute walk), one of the most popular taco stands in the neighborhood

Bars

Most nights feature live music or karaoke at Bar Papagayo (12-minute walk), where you can get a feel for the under-the-radar Santa Maria La Ribera neighborhood. Cantina El Golfo del Leon (6-minute walk) is a traditional cantina, with occasional roaming mariachis, a good assortment of botanas (bar snacks) given free after 3 drinks, and a Saturday buffet.
