If you're looking for a peaceful back-to-nature retreat, check out this hotel on a long, secluded beach that straddles the line between desert and ocean. Once the diners clear out of the adjacent and very popular Buzzard's Bar & Grill, La Fonda is even more tranquil. A sandy pathway leads to three thatch-roof cabañas and one suite—all in heavy demand by both surfers and the more adventurous in high season. Cabañas have Wi-Fi, ceiling fans (no air-conditioning), and en suite toilets and sinks but share a shower; the suite has standard in-room facilities. The whole operation runs on solar power. Reservations can be made online but payment is cash only.
