Fodor's Expert Review Holiday Inn Resort Los Cabos
Blvd. Mijares and Paseo San José, cul-de-sac at end of the Zona Hotelera, San José del Cabo, Baja California Sur 23400, México See on Map
The former home of the Presidente InterContinental Los Cabos, the familiar Holiday Inn brand has taken over this sprawling property featuring cactus gardens that surround low-lying terracotta-colored buildings. Much of the former InterContinental still remains, including an attentive, friendly, old-world Mexican attitude among the staff members. The hotel has three sections, one is adults-only and one is for families. Each is centered on pools and lounging areas, but rooms on the ground floor have terraces and hammocks and are considered the best option. All accommodations have showers but no bathtubs.
Rooms are rather generically decorated – with splashes of color provided by red bed runners, nightstands, and table lamps – but boast comforting amenities like air-conditioning, cable television, and Wi-Fi. Ground floor Lanai guestrooms showcase terraces strung with hammocks.
Bathrooms feature showers but not tubs, with single sinks and wall-mounted hair dryers.
Patterned tile floors distinguish the large lobby, which flows from check-in counters to a broad well-lighted area adorned with colorful Mexican paintings.
The resort boasts three spacious swimming pools, reserved respectively for adults, families, and children. The kids pool has a play station complete with water slides.
Massage services are available on-site through an independently operated spa.
The fitness center is fitted out with both cardio-focused and resistance-oriented machines, as well as a limited selection of free weights. Tennis courts offer a workout alternative.
The adjacent estuary is home to abundant native flora and fauna, with trails marked out for walking, and lookout posts for bird watchers.
Buffet and a la carte restaurants are among the generous all-inclusive options.
Palo de arco pergola shaded beach bar Azul Estero offers tropical cocktails and spectacular Sea of Cortés views. The five other on-site drinking spots include a sports bar and a palapa-topped swim-up pool bar.
The beach (Playa Hotelera) is accessible from the resort and neighboring properties, and one of the premier local shopping destinations, Plaza del Pescador, is within walking distance. Taxi service is a good option for trips to downtown San José del Cabo, or to local grocery stores. Rental cars are recommended for more far-reaching explorations, either to Cabo San Lucas or to other popular regional destinations like Todos Santos and La Paz.
Habanero’s Gastro Grill, one of a trio of restaurants from acclaimed local chef Tadd Chapman, is a short drive away (2-minutes on Blvd. Mijares). Habanero’s specializes in Mexican fusion cuisine, and also maintains a tequila bar with a huge selection of premium Mexican liquors.
Rock & Brews – the bar and restaurant chain founded by KISS musicians Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley – has a location at nearby Plaza del Pescador (2-minute drive or 10-minute walk on the Paseo Malecón), where it serves up beer, burgers, and rock star ambiance, along with rollicking live music on Saturday nights.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The resort delivers the standard of accommodations, rates, and service one would expect from the Holiday Inn brand, plus acres of gorgeous beachfront and sparkling views of the Sea of Cortés.
