Fodor's Expert Review Mia Reef Isla Mujeres

Calle Zazcil-Ha s/n 7, Isla Yunque, Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, 77400, Mexico

Editor's Note: This location is reported to be under new ownership and therefore this review may contain inaccuracies.

This former Avalon resort sits on a tiny island called Isla Yunque, and is connected to the northern tip of Isla Mujeres by a long wooden bridge. The seaside studios take advantage of the gorgeous location with balconies overlooking the ocean, but are overpriced and dated. Regular rooms in the hotel tower underwent complete renovation in late 2014, with the addition of glass balconies. Between the freestanding studios and the main tower are a palapa restaurant, a private beach, and swinging beach beds suspended from ropes. The greatest draw is Bano del Rey (King’s Bath), a warm, natural pool behind the islet only accessible to hotel guests. Be warned: this still operates as an Avalon time-share resort, and preference is given to those who bought into the members program.
