Fodor's Review

One of Guadalajara most famous dishes is the “Torta Ahogada”, literally a drowned sandwich. It’s a baguette filled with pork meat served in a kind of bowl with lots (and we are talking lots!) of hot tomato sauce on top of it. Well, on top, on the sides, on bottom, the sauce is just everywhere and that’s why they are called “ahogadas”. There are two sauces in every establishment serving this kind of “tortas”, one is just tomato sauce and the other one is incredible spicy. It’s very important not to confuse them, because if you are not used to the kind of chile Mexicans like to eat, you will be crying soon after your first bite. Add onions, beans and lemon, and you have the best remedy for hangover in the world! Tortas Toño serves the best “ahogadas” in town and all their branchs are very clean and well-managed.
