In pre-Hispanic times Tepotzotlán was an important stop along the trade route between Toluca and Texcoco. Tepotzotlán (pronounced teh-po-tzot-lan), less than an hour's car or bus ride from Mexico City, is still a frequent stop for travelers headed to Tula and environs.
