Momostenango

It's "Momo" in local parlance and on the front of the buses that shuttle you here from Quetzaltenango. This is one of the few places left in Guatemala where the 260-day Mayan calendar is still observed. The small town has become Guatemala's blanket central. Townspeople turn out woolen blankets (chamarras) by foot on treadle looms. The works were historically undyed, bearing simple designs and only the white, black, and brown colors of natural wool; however, dyeing has become a new phenomenon, with all manner of colors to choose from. Check them out, as well as high-quality woolen ponchos on Momo's Wednesday and Sunday market days.
