Fodor's Expert Review Tapirus Lodge

Guápiles Hwy., Braulio Carrillo National Park, San José, Costa Rica

Just north of Braulio Carrillo lies a splendid, eco-minded lodging option whose environmental impact is so unobtrusive that barely anyone knows it exists—and staying here lets you enjoy one of the Caribbean region's premier attractions after the day-trippers have left. Although the site is best known for its famous aerial tram, there are accommodations at the Rainforest Adventures complex. The bungalows are inconspicuously tucked away and are rustic—don’t expect air-conditioning or TV—but colorful and cozy. In an effort to minimize impact, food is locally grown, and electricity shuts off after 9 pm. Advance reservations are required.
