Fodor's Expert Review Villas Gaia

Off the Costanera Hwy., 15 km (9 miles) south of Uvita, Playa Tortuga, Puntarenas, 60504, Costa Rica

Conveniently just off the highway, these spacious, tasteful casitas are hidden behind a ridge overlooking bird-filled forest ravines leading to Playa Tortuga. All the clapboard-sided casitas have air-conditioning, handsome wood furniture, and breezy terraces with ceiling fans. Bathrooms are modern and bright and linens in lovely lavender and orange hues cover the comfortable beds. Two 2-bedroom houses that can accommodate five to seven guests are ideal for families. The sleek and modern restaurant, with chandeliers made of interlaced mangrove roots, has an eclectic and creative menu ranging from Mexican to Thai. The highlight of a stay here is the fabulous, cooked-to-order breakfast and excellent coffee served on a covered terrace above the pool, where you can enjoy breezy ocean views and morning birding. A steep forest trail leads from the villas down to the beach. The hotel arranges horseback, mangrove, sea kayaking, and nature tours led by the hotel's own expert bird guide. Eco-conscious visitors will appreciate that the hotel has earned four out of five leaves in the sustainable-tourism program. A few garden casitas closer to the highway are a little noisier and therefore less expensive.
