Fodor's Expert Review Trogón Lodge

San Gerardo de Dota, San Gerardo, Cartago, 11702, Costa Rica

Set in a riotous garden filled with fuchsias, hydrangeas, and hummingbirds, Trogón Lodge is more a picturesque hideaway than a hiking-heavy destination. The Río Savegre rushes over boulders alongside the property, and man-made cascades, ponds, and fountains keep water flowing in the gardens. The green-roof wooden cabins have comfortable rooms with a double and a single bed and big windows. New snow-white duvets, flannel sheets, and rafts of plumped-up pillows ensure a warm night's sleep. White-tile bathrooms have rain showerheads. Gas heaters and extra blankets also guard against the chilly mountain nights. The only drawback is that units have shared verandas overlooking the rushing river and surrounding cloud forest. A honeymoon cabin perched in solitary splendor has a king-size bed and a whirlpool tub with a panoramic view. Excellent meals featuring fresh trout are served at tree-trunk tables in a cozy restaurant with a woodstove, and a bar and dining terrace gaze out over the trout ponds and the river. A separate, large bar area has a billiard table and a video room that features nature documentaries and a book exchange. Quetzal-watching, horseback riding, waterfall hikes, and an 11-platform canopy tour ($35) are some of the diversions.
