Fodor's Expert Review Savegre Hotel, Natural Reserve & Spa

San Gerardo de Dota, San Gerardo, Cartago, 11702, Costa Rica Fodor's Choice

Famous for its miles of bird-watching trails and its expert guides, this once-rustic lodge now has cabin suites with handsome wood furnishings, crackling fireplaces, and deep bathtubs, plus a full-service, riverside spa. Standard rooms, set in colorful, bird-attracting gardens, are spacious, with high ceilings, two comfortable double beds, pleasant sitting areas, electric heaters, and modern bathrooms. These were unthinkable luxuries back in the 1950s, when Don Efrain Chacón first bushwhacked his way through these mountains. Still run by his children and grandchildren, the main lodge has a huge firepit, a spacious bar, and a gift shop with lots of useful bird-watching items, including rain ponchos. Breakfast and lunch can be served on a large sunny terrace frequented by hummingbirds. Homegrown trout is the restaurant's specialty. A hearty buffet breakfast is included in the rate. If you want to avoid the twisting drive down the San Gerardo road, take a bus to Km 80 on the Pan-American Highway and arrange a lift to the hotel ($25 for up to 5 people).
