Fodor’s Expert Review

Unbeatable views and affordable prices set these private, spacious wood cabins apart, literally, since they are high on a forested ridge overlooking the ocean. The four stylishly rustic cabins—one sleeps six, others sleep two to four—have kitchenettes, tiled bathrooms, hammocks strung on wide porches, and comfortable mattresses covered with colorful Guatemalan bedspreads. Host Susie Atkinson serves great breakfasts (not included in rate) in the lodge's bamboo-roof, pagoda-style dining room. Two lookout towers at each end of the tiny pool and a viewing deck catch the spectacular sunsets and passing whale pods. A magnificent carved Boruca totem pole presides over the pool area. Susie is an outstanding sponsor of the Borucan arts, and guests and visitors will find here the area's largest selection of carved masks and woven bags, belts, and purses made by this indigenous group. Bear in mind that the road up to this lofty perch requires a 4WD vehicle, and be prepared for a barky welcome; Susie and her husband, George, love big (but gentle) dogs. The reception desk closes at 6 pm. Children under 13 years old are not allowed, to maintain the property's tranquility and privacy.
