Part bar, part soda, this downtown San José institution has been dishing up tasty, filling, and huge portions of típico food for over a century. Empanadas, arroz con pollo (chicken with rice), and monster ham-and-cheese Cuban sandwiches lead the fare. The folks here speak barely a word of English, but they’ll figure out what you want even if your restaurant Spanish is nonexistent. Wi-Fi is also available. Chelles is open 24 hours, but do exercise care if you’re out and about on the streets at 3 am.
