Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Britannia

C. 3 and Avda. 11, San José, San José, 10102, Costa Rica

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

This mango-color home—technically it's two houses in one—is the largest and most luxurious of the old Barrio Amón houses that now serve as lodgings. The original home is a stately old building with tile porch that has changed little since its construction in 1910 (except for the conversion of the old wine cellar into an intimate international restaurant) and a newer addition with slightly smaller, carpeted rooms. We like the deluxe rooms and junior suites in the original house: they're spacious—with high ceilings and windows on the street side—and worth the extra money, though street noise might be a problem if you're a light sleeper. All rooms are nonsmoking.
