Fodor's Expert Review Rancho Curubandé Lodge

600 m off Pan-American Hwy. on road to Las Pailas, Rincón de la Vieja National Park, Guanacaste, 108-5000, Costa Rica

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Convenient to both Rincón de la Vieja (20 km [12 miles]) and Santa Rosa National Park (30 km [18 miles]), these very affordable, two-bedroom villas and standard rooms are part of a working farm owned by a Costa Rican family. The tidy villas have full kitchens, hot water, Wi-Fi, satellite TV, and air-conditioning; the 16 motel-style rooms have the same creature comforts as the villas (minus the kitchens), with double beds plus a view of the volcano from a deck under a giant guanacaste tree. A breakfast buffet is included in the rate, but taxes are not. The on-site restaurant serves typical Costa Rican dishes. There's a river and swimming hole on the property, and the hotel can arrange various tours including biking, canopy, horseback riding, and river rafting. Substantial discounts are available for travelers wanting to harvest sugarcane and hay on the farm between November 15 and February 15.
