Air Travel

Aeropuerto Internacional Daniel Oduber Quirós (LIR) in Liberia is an international gateway to the coast, with a large, air-conditioned terminal. Tamarindo, Nosara, Playa Sámara, and Punta Islita also have small airstrips. Flying from San José to these airports is the best way to get here if you are already in the country. If your primary destination lies in Guanacaste or Nicoya, make sure you investigate the possibility of flying directly into Liberia instead of San José, which saves some serious hours on the road.

Alaska Airlines has direct service between Los Angeles and Costa Rica's two international airports in San José and Liberia. SANSA and Nature Air have scheduled flights between San José and Liberia, as well as destinations on the Nicoya Peninsula. Don't forget to factor in the exit tax, $29 by air and $7 by land, payable in U.S. dollars, colones, or credit card. Some airlines include this fee in the ticket price.
