Fodor's Expert Review Villas Playa Sámara

Off main road to Playa Carrillo, 2 km (1¼ mile) south of town, Sámara, Guanacaste, 50205, Costa Rica

Families come back to this property year after year for good reason: there's lots to do, the villas are spacious and practical, and the beach setting is fabulous. The resort is spread along the picture-perfect southern end of the beach, where the ocean is even more pristine than it is near town, and shallow and safe enough for swimming. The recently renovated, white-stucco, Spanish-style one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas are sprinkled across the property's gardens and wide lawns. They have kitchens and dining areas with daybeds that are perfect for kids (those under age 3 stay free) and shaded terraces with either a hammock or chairs. Most have ocean views filtered through the palms, but the duplex villas 2A/B and 11A/B are especially close to the beach, and thus cost extra; 17A/B is a close second. There are also16 deluxe rooms, in two-story units, with air-conditioning, private terraces, minibars, microwaves, and coffeemakers, but no kitchens. More deluxe rooms are in the works, farther back in the garden. A game room and entertainment center keeps kids busy; a spa and yoga classes will help their parents relax. The pool has lots of room for kids and grown-ups alike. The restaurant food is not terrific; it's best to cook for yourself or dine in town, a 15-minute walk along the beach. This is the perfect place for families, and for sports fishermen to park their families while they cruise off in search of the big fish.
