There’s no shortage of steak houses near Arenal, but El Gran Abuelo pushes to the front of the pack with perfectly grilled steak. Tender and flavorful tri-tip and steak platters can easily feed a small family and are served on huge griddles with sides like garlic-lemon yuca, salad, tortillas, and veggies. Straight from the grill to your table, sizzling entrées are delivered in cast iron skillets with a serious knife to cut into your carne. Specials include wine or smoothies, and for non-beef eaters, the ceviche is outstanding. Vegetarians can chose from wood-fired pizzas, pasta dishes, or fresh salads. Hardly anyone leaves without trying the house dessert, a spin on traditional cheesecake made with condensed milk, lime, and cookies. This roadside restaurant is worth the 10-minute drive from La Fortuna.
