Fodor's Expert Review Belcampo Lodge Farm and Agritourism Center
Belcampo, the luxury lodge near Punta Gorda, has an evolving agritourism program that involves teaching guests about the production of three important Belize products grown locally: chocolate, from organic cacao with classes at a chocolate center; rum, from local sugarcane; and coffee, from beans produced, prepared, and roasted locally. Short classes are given at various times on different aspects of local agriculture, such as chocolate and vanilla bean production. In addition to it upscale jungle lodge, Belcampo has a 3,000-acre farm—about 70% of the food consumed at the lodge is produced at the farm—with an agritourism center and 15,000-acre nature preserve near the lodge in Toledo. Programs, lengths, and costs vary, but are usually expensive. Check with the lodge to see what is offered at the time you expect to be there.
