Fodor's Expert Review Rock Farm Guest House

Roar River Dr., Belmopan, Cayo, Belize Fodor's Choice

Large, comfortable rooms nestled on a 52-acre farm greet you in this serene and eco-friendly guesthouse. You'll awake at dawn to a chorus of parrots and parakeets, along with the occasional rooster. Rates here are remarkably inexpensive, and the owners prepare full English breakfasts and comfort-food dinners, served with strong drinks on a veranda with views over the bush. Ask to see the amazing, nearly perpetually in-motion waterwheel at the river that provides water for the entire farm. Hotel guests have exclusive access to the Belize Bird Rescue, which rehabilitates the birds and, when possible, releases them back into the wild. At any one time, the avian rehabilitation center and bird sanctuary may have up to 200 birds on their farm near Belmopan, including as many as eight of the country's nine species of parrots, along with some owls, sea birds, and other raptor birds.
