Fodor's Expert Review La Casa del Caballo Blanco
Bullet Tree Rd., next to San Ignacio Hospital, San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
Caballo Blanco is named after a resident white horse that whinnies affably on the ecolodge's sloping lawn with a panorama of hills in the distance. There are six rooms with tile floors, decorated with Guatemalan fabrics, in three duplex thatch cabañas. The main lodge building evokes the style of a 19th-century hacienda. A knoll-top location, near the San Ignacio Hospital, provides lovely views of San Ignacio and the hills beyond, and at night the meadow below the lodge comes alive with thousands of flickering fireflies. Breakfasts (BZ$19, plus tax and service) and dinners (BZ$40 plus tax and service) are served in a small dining room, but there is no bar. The lodge is home to Casa Avian Support Alliance (CASA), a "rehab center" for birds recovering from injury, illness, and captivity, and the lodge's 23 acres are a bird sanctuary.
