Fodor's Expert Review St. George's Caye Resort

St. George's Caye, Belize District, Belize

In colonial days St. George's Caye was a British favorite because of its proximity to Belize City, about 20 minutes by boat; more recently wealthy Belize City families weekended on the island, and today visitors favor the adult-only resort as a rustic venue for adventure. The operators know that St. George's is not for everyone, and only want to draw those eager to leave their comfort zone, or find a new one. Some of the thatch cottages are partly over the water, but on the lee side of the island, which doesn't get the cooling breezes. Beachfront cottages on the sea side are preferred. Electricity comes from the lodge's own windmills. The resort has a swimming pool and offers limited spa services. Complimentary windsurfing boards and instruction are available. Dining is family-style and social, but a private dinner on the dock can be arranged. Expect limited choices of entrées.
