Fodor's Expert Review Van Müzesi

Van

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

Van's one museum aims to highlight local Urartian heritage, especially its famous metalwork; the collection includes rich gold jewelry and belts and plates engraved with lions, bulls, and sphinxes. Other items are carved relief of the god Teshup, for whom the Urartian capital was named, and intriguing humanoid stelae found in Hakkâri, in the mountains to the south. As of this writing, the museum had relocated to a sprawling, gleaming building facing Van Castle and was due to reopen in late 2015.
