Fodor's Expert Review Karahayıt

Pamukkale (Hierapolis) Town/Village

Only 6½ km (4 miles) from Pamukkale, this down-to-earth village attracts visitors for its "red springs," where the warm mineral water and gooey mud are popular for their supposed health-giving properties. The springs are open to the public and flanked by inexpensive restaurants—mud baths and dead-skin-nibbling "doctor fish" pools are also available for a fee. Locals will tell you that drinking the springwater is good for digestion, and those with a strong stomach may want to put this to the test. There's dolmuş service from Pamukkale to Karahayıt, but ask in town before embarking about the status of the baths; some were shut down by the municipality in 2015 and it was unclear whether they would reopen.
