Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Drachenburg und Waaghaus
Am Schlosspark 7 and 10, Gottlieben, Thurgau, 8274, Switzerland Fodor's Choice
Editor's Note: This location is reported to be under new ownership and therefore this review may contain inaccuracies.
On the Rhine between the Bodensee and the Untersee, these two half-timber apparitions of onion domes, shutters, and gargoyles were first built in 1715 and retain their historic air despite modern expansions. The interiors are just as ornate, though the Drachenburg is the most atmospheric. It has gleaming old staircases, four-poster beds, brocade, and crystal sconces scattered throughout. Rhine-view rooms are furnished like honeymoon suites. Its restaurants vary in ambience; the most sophisticated is the one in the original house.
PROS
- extremely quiet
- tons of character
- right on the Rhine
CONS
- in an isolated town
- overtly theme-parkish
- some beds are squeaky
